In this day and age we are constantly sending personal information over the internet without giving it a second thought but whether you are logging into your bank account or just having a private chat with your best friend you don’t want anyone snooping on you.
Consumer choice Which? Found that more than 100,000 indoor security cameras in UK homes and businesses potentially have critical security flaws which would put them at risk of hacking.
So why would you leave your site CCTV open for people to snoop and see what is there to steal?
As a business data security is high on our agenda and therefore we use a VPN.
What is a VPN?
We have all watched the James Bond films and FBI programmes when they try and trace an IP address for a criminal mastermind. For example at the start of The Bourne Identity film – Julia Stiles bounces her signal around the globe while accessing the CIA database.
Just as a VPN allows spies to change their IP address and appear as though they are in a different country SmartWatch uses a VPN Connection for all our sites to protect our clients’ data and ensure that hackers cannot get into their CCTV.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) forms a secure tunnel between the client’s CCTV server and our cloud based server. Each site is issued an IP address on the local network meaning the client’s CCTV server now behaves like it is connected within our firewall even though it can be anywhere in the world.
If your CCTV is left on a public network or without a VPN Connection by your current provider, you could experience IP and Data leaks which make your private data vulnerable to hackers and other online threats.
Are the FBI or MI5 watching your site? Probably not, but you are leaving your sites vulnerable to hackers who could leak your data or hack your CCTV to view the site for their criminal friends to steal from.
